District 2 will have plenty of representation for this year’s Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association East-West Small All-Star Football Game.
Nine players, including five from the Lackawanna Football Conference and two coaches, are part of the East roster for the May 18 game at noon at Cumberland Valley High School’s Chapman Field. The rosters were announced Thursday afternoon.
Wyoming Area coach Randy Spencer will lead the team as the head coach, while Berwick’s CJ Curry is an assistant on the staff.
Spencer will have four players from his team playing — running back Lidge Kellum, offensive lineman Chase DeSanto, defensive tackle Andrew Steinberger and kicker-punter John Turner.
Lackawanna Trail defensive back Max Kimmel, Western Wayne safety Sean Owens and defensive tackle Evan Dean, Riverside tight end Richie Kostoff and Scranton Prep linebacker Reese Tanner are also on the East roster.
Kimmel, last season’s Times-Tribune Defensive Player of the Year and two-time Class 1A all-state selection, led Lackawanna Trail to the Lackawanna Football Conference Division III and District 2 Class 1A championships. He had 44 total tackles with 36 solo and three for loss, a sack, a fumble return for a 98-yard touchdown, 13 passes defended and nine interceptions with three returned for touchdowns. He finished his career with 178 total tackles with 135 solo, eight for loss, a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown, 24 passes defended, 22 interceptions and three returned for touchdowns.
Owens was a four-year starter at Western Wayne. He had 71 solo tackles and 32 assists for 103 total tackles with seven for loss. He had nine interceptions for 156 yards with two returned for touchdowns, and had seven passes defended, one fumble recovery, one forced fumble and one blocked field goal. He finished his career with 222 total tackles with 12 for loss and 19 interceptions for 289 yards and 15 passes defended.
His teammate on the Western Wayne defense, Dean, earned All-Region honors after he had 44 solo tackles, 46 assists for 90 total tackles with six for loss and 2.5 sacks. He added seven quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. He finished his career with 84 solo tackles, 111 assists, 195 total tackles with 11 for loss, five sacks, 14 quarterback hurries, two fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles.
Kostoff led Riverside to the District 2 Class 2A championship, the program’s first district title since 2010. He had 54 receptions for 773 yards and 11 touchdowns. He added 498 yards rushing and four touchdowns. He finished his career with 136 receptions to rank No. 5 in LIAA history for 1,725 yards to rank 10th in LIAA history and 20 touchdowns.
Tanner led the Scranton Prep defense with 158 tackles, 14 for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and two passes defended. The Cavaliers won the LFC Division I and District 2 Class 3A championships. He is a three-year starter with more than 339 tackles and 24 for loss in his career.
