QUINCY WILSON
WEIRTON – The most decorated football player to don a Red Rider uniform will now be patrolling the sidelines of his alma mater.
The Weir Red Riders have hired former standout player Quincy Wilson as their head coach, Weir athletic director Sean Blumette confirmed with The Intelligencer on Monday.
“Very simply, we are tremendously excited,” Blumette said. “To have somebody like Quincy- a high caliber player, coach and person- want to come back to his alma mater, back to his hometown, to help bring his energy and passion back to our program, is amazing.”
Wilson was a Kennedy Award winner in 1998, and led Weir to an undefeated 14-0 state championship season that same year. Wilson played four years at WVU, garnering 2281 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns between his junior and senior seasons.
He spent parts of five seasons in the NFL before transitioning into a coaching career beginning back at WVU as assistant director of football operations.
Wilson has been an assistant at Glenville State, West Virginia State and Fairmont State, and was set to take charge of Rio Grande, who was reviving their football program which was defunct since 1950, before the two sides split in November.
Wilson also spent time as head coach at the University of Fort Lauderdale.
“We were very excited when we originally had heard that Quincy was interested,” Blumette said. “He had reached out to us when coach [Frank] Sissini left for Brooke and asked what the process would be, so we talked to him about what all would need to be done. He was on-board with getting started with that process.
“We were able to interview him via Zoom, and the committee was totally impressed by his energy, his passion, his love for Weir High, and what he is hoping to bring to our program.”
The Red Riders went 11-2 in the 2023-24 season, but tumbled to a 1-9 record last year. The team graduates a class which includes quarterback Lucas Mcallister and receiver Damir Mowder, who is committed to Fairmont State.
“As an athletic director you don’t get many chances to higher somebody of that quality, of that reputation, of that legacy, to come back to their alma mater,” Blumette said. “We really think this is going to build some excitement going into the ’25 season.”
