EWING, N.J. – Tyler Moody has been chosen as TCNJ’s new football head coach, as announced Monday by Director of Athletics Liz Shatkus. Moody becomes the 14th head coach in the program’s history.
Moody comes to TCNJ after a 14-year stint at Stonehill College, where he spent the previous nine years as offensive coordinator and the last four as associate head coach. After overseeing the offensive line for eight years, Moody recently completed his sixth as quarterbacks coach.
“I’m truly honored to be the next head football coach at The College of New Jersey,” Moody said. “TCNJ’s commitment to developing highly motivated students and challenging them to pursue excellence resonates with me. I believe in the values of the institution, and I’m excited to contribute to the school’s mission by developing our players both on and off the field. The players and current staff have worked tirelessly to build a great foundation here. We’ll build on that and continue to strengthen our culture as a football program. I’m excited to connect with the players, staff, alumni, and supporters who make TCNJ Football so special.”
Moody brings a proven track record of strong offensive line play, continually building his units into some of the best in the Northeast-10 and developing a bevy of all-conference performers. In his first season as run game coordinator in 2013, the Skyhawks won a share of their first Northeast-10 regular season championship and ranked in the top-25 nationally in red-zone offense.
Moody was promoted to associate head coach in 2020, and the Skyhawks went 8-2 in 2021 before officially joining the Division I ranks in 2022. Stonehill adapted quickly to the ascension to Division I, going 9-10 overall and 6-8 in conference play in its first two seasons.
Moody coached 32 all-conference players during his time at Stonehill, and his offenses broke nearly every single-game and single-season school record on the books. The Skyhawks averaged over 30 points per game in three consecutive seasons, even extending into their transition to Division I, and since then Moody has helped the program post the No. 1 rushing offense and No. 2 scoring offense in two of the first three campaigns at the D1 level.
Moody is also a strong recruiter with extensive experience in identifying talent in the state of New Jersey. In each of the last nine seasons at Stonehill, at least 17 players have either hailed from the Garden State or played high school football there.
Prior to his time at Stonehill, Moody spent one season at the University of Massachusetts, where he served as assistant offensive line coach for the No. 2-ranked total offense in the CAA. He managed recruiting territories for parts of New Jersey and the junior colleges of Northern California.
Moody spent two seasons as a defensive assistant at Amherst College, where he developed a pair of All-Conference selections. He assisted in all areas for the defensive coordinator and helped manage a national recruiting effort.
Moody is a 2008 graduate of Centre College, where he was a four-year starter and senior captain for the Colonels. He was a three-time All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) honoree and earned All-South Region honors and participated in the Division III Football Aztec Bowl in 2007.
A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Moody takes over a program that went 6-4 in 2024, posting its first winning season in 13 years. TCNJ expects to have seven returning All-NJAC players on the roster this fall, and Moody inherits an offense that ranked fourth in Division III in passing (328.5 yards per game) and 23rd in total offense (447.7 YPG) as well as a defense that was ninth in fumble recoveries (13) and 13th in takeaways (26).
“On behalf of the entire TCNJ community, I am excited to welcome Tyler and his family to Ewing as the new head football coach,” Shatkus said. “His dedication to enhancing the student-athlete experience, exceptional football IQ, and recruiting ties to New Jersey are exactly what is needed to continue to elevate this program. I look forward to the impact he will make both on and off the field to build a program rooted in excellence and success.
I would also like to thank Eric Jendryaszek for his leadership and commitment throughout the interim process last season. His contributions have been invaluable, and I am grateful for the energy and passion he brought to the role and excited for him to work alongside Tyler as an assistant coach.”
WHAT THEY’RE SAYING
“Tyler has made a lasting impact on the Stonehill football program for the past 14 years. He has proven to always put the student-athletes first while demonstrating his ability to develop men on and off the field. His departure is bittersweet, but he undoubtedly will help build TCNJ into a consistent contender for league titles while doing so with passion and integrity. Congratulations to TCNJ on a terrific hire and to Tyler and his family for this well-deserved opportunity.”
–Eli Gardner, Head Football Coach at Stonehill College
“We are thrilled at Centre that The College of New Jersey has named Tyler Moody as their new head football coach. As a former outstanding player and captain at Centre, TCNJ is getting not only a great football coach, but even more importantly a coach who will transform the lives of the men and players he mentors. Tyler will bring a passion for the game and an expectation for excellence, not only on the playing field and in the classroom, but on your campus as well. Congratulations to Tyler and to your football alumni at TCNJ! You all got a good one!”
-Andy Frye, Head Football Coach at Centre College
“Tyler Moody is an exceptional football coach. He is a master technician in all aspects of the game. His greatest attribute, as a coach, is the care he will invest in every one of his players. Coach Moody establishes a personal connection with every player. He works to see each of them become the best version of themselves, both on and off the field. Tyler is a winner, and he will run a stellar football program. TCNJ is getting a remarkable person and a wonderful TCNJ ambassador in Tyler Moody.”
