DULUTH, Minn.—The search for the fourth head football coach in The College of St. Scholastica’s program history ends with a familiar face taking on the mantle. Assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Matt Bremer has been promoted to lead the Saints football team.
In his two stints spanning eleven years with St. Scholastica, Bremer most recently led a 2024 campaign that saw the Saints finish in the top five in multiple offensive categories in the MIAC, including scoring, total yards, passing yards and red zone efficiency. This offensive output helped the Saints finish with their most MIAC wins in program history this past season. Bremer demonstrated a commitment to ensuring that his athletes succeed in the classroom and on the field. The 2024 team set a GPA record of 3.26 and were active members on campus and in the wider community.
Over his coaching career, Bremer has presided over twelve all-conference players, five conference championships, and NCAA Division III playoff appearances. He was recently inducted into the St. Scholastica Athletics Hall of Fame as a member of the 2011 football team staff. Additionally, he has been asked to speak at multiple coaching clinics and was honored at the AFCA National Convention.
“I am thrilled to continue the work that has already been done to build and grow Saints Football,” said Bremer of his new role. “In my time at St. Scholastica, our program has always been one of service. I look forward to continuing to serve our players, alumni, staff and The College of St. Scholastica community in this role. I am extremely proud of what those associated with our program have built in our short history. We will continue to be leaders and winners, not only on the field but also in the classroom and the community.”
Bremer continued, “I want to thank Director of Athletics Jessica Cherry and the hiring committee for their hard work during this hiring process. I also want to thank President Barbara McDonald for entrusting this opportunity to our dedicated staff and me. Lastly, I want to thank our alumni and our players for their unwavering support and their work laying the foundation of Saints Football!”
Athletic Director Jessica Cherry said about the new hire: “Today marks the beginning of a new era for our football program! I am beyond excited to welcome our new head coach, Matthew Bremer, a proven leader who will inspire greatness both on and off the field. Coach Bremer embodies the Saints’ passion, vision, commitment to excellence and a winning mentality. Get ready for a thrilling ride!”
Bremer resides in Duluth with his wife, Stephanie and their two children, Titus and Selah.
