PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) -It was a big day Wednesday at Rutherford High School. For starters, the Rams honoring Aleiyah Willett, who this past Saturday, won the individual state title for 1A weightlifting in the 119-pound class traditional. Willett one of several area lifters winning an individual title, along with three from Wewahitchka, two from North Bay Haven and one each from Altha, Chipley and Holmes. Willett the first female lifter ever from Rutherford to make it to State and to win a state title. She’s a trailblazer. She told us “Well being a state champion definitely a new feeling, never felt like this, never expected it. It’s definitely just like mind blowing basically. There’s not much to say besides how happy I am to be in this position.” Her weightlifting coach John Simpson added “We are very proud. I mean it has been huge for us. We’re going to have a pep rally, the kids are excited. It just, we needed something like this to really show that it really can be done here at Rutherford. And it goes with inspiring the other students that want to do what she did.”
Immediately after Miss Willett was honored, three Rutherford football players signed college offers. Roman Holmes, a 5-7 defensive back who actually played all over the field for the coach Floyd and the Rams signing with Lighthouse College, a D3 in Pensacola. Chaz’ton Scott, a 6-foot, 185-pound linebacker and running back, signing with Marion Military Institute, an NAIA school in Maine Maritime Academy up in Maine. Logan Licona, the Rams six-foot, 290-pound center this past season, signing on with Maine Maritime Academy well.
