PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Portland State University football has called Hillsboro Stadium its gameday home away from home for the past seven years. But this season, the Vikings will be closer to campus for their biggest rivalry game of the season.
For the first time since 2018, the Vikings will play at Providence Park when PSU hosts the Montana Grizzlies for homecoming on Nov. 15.
“We really want to get out of the gate with a great game, with a great turnout of our fans, of people from the city of Portland as well as the fans from Montana because I think that’s going to be a great proof of concept to go forward with,” said PSU president Ann Cudd.

Cudd, along with PSU’s new athletic director Matt Billings are hopeful that more games could be played in the downtown stadium in the coming years.
“The challenge and the group that has the negative impact with us playing in Hillsboro are our students,” Billings said. “So, us being able to come here allows better access for our student body to come down and watch our student-athletes perform and our coaches coach.”
The Vikings first played football at what was then known as Multnomah Stadium in 1949, where the program called it home from 1967 to 2018.
“I want every game here. It’s great in Hillsboro, but there’s a lot of tradition here,” said Bruce Barnum, PSU football head coach. “We made it homecoming, ready to go, we’ll see where it goes from here.”
This will be Barnum’s 11th season as head coach, and for now, Hillsboro will remain the Vikings’ full-season home.
