Owensboro High School is turning the page on a new era of football, naming DaMarcus Ganaway as its next head coach following the resignation of longtime leader Jay Fallin after this past season.
Ganaway was most recently the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator at Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida, and was introduced as the program’s 30th head coach during a press conference earlier today at OHS.
“I am excited to step into the role of head coach of the Owensboro High School Red Devils,” Ganaway said. “Owensboro’s football program and its tradition of excellence is a legacy I am honored to uphold. I can’t wait to work with the great coaches, talented athletes, and the dedicated community that make Friday nights at Rash Stadium truly special.”
A native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Ganaway played collegiately at Kentucky Wesleyan University, where he earned All-American honors. He later spent a season with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent before transitioning into coaching. Before joining the high school ranks, he helped create Dynasty Sports Performance, a business aimed at assisting young athletes in their development and college recruitment.
Ganaway was familiar with Owensboro before applying for the position, having played alongside Fallin at Kentucky Wesleyan. He reached out to Fallin and other connections in the area while considering the opportunity.
“The tradition and history of Owensboro football are already an attraction in themselves,” Ganaway said. “Jay Fallin and I went to college together at Kentucky Wesleyan, so I had a personal connection. Being a former head coach in the area, I reached out to him, and some friends and people in the area reached out to me, which made the opportunity even more intriguing. You can’t go wrong with interest in a program like this.”
Ganaway is no stranger to western Kentucky football. From 2017-20, he served as the receivers coach and later the head coach at Ohio County.
“It feels good to be back,” he said. “The Owensboro program, just having the history behind this program and the tradition, is something you can’t discount or take for granted. I’m really excited, thankful, and blessed for the opportunity.”
Ganaway emphasized his commitment to maintaining Owensboro’s winning culture while fostering strong relationships with players and the community.
“That is winning ball games,” he said. “The expectations are high. They are high for myself, so I want to spread that to the boys and get them to play as hard as they can and let that continue to stack up some wins for us.”
Beyond the field, Ganaway is also focused on academic success. Owensboro’s team posted a 3.71 GPA last year, and he hopes to push that as close to 4.0 as possible.
Earlier in the day, he met with his new players, bringing an energy that carried into his formal introduction.
“It was fun to get in front of them and have a moment to talk to the boys and get on the same page,” Ganaway said. “I talked to them about expectations, communication, and building relationships within the program with each other, be it player to player or coach to player. Just building excitement within so it leads to the success we all want to see.”
Ganaway will now begin assembling his staff and preparing for his first season at the helm of one of Kentucky’s most storied high school football programs.
