CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The UVa football team began spring practice on Monday.
UVa coach Tony Elliott begins his fourth season at UVA.
He has the tough job of trying to mesh his incumbent players with 19 new transfers.
“It’s going to be a fun challenge for us this spring,” says Elliott. “So far there looks like there’s a good chemistry and a good bond between the guys that are here.”
The veterans in the program now competing for playing tie and starting jobs.
“Being a guy who’s been here. You don’t want to lose your spot,” says UVA defensive lineman Anthony Britton. ” So their encouraging you to work even harder, We are bouncing ideas off each other. It’s been a really good vibe.”
“Competitive depth is something we talk about a lot,” UVa grad student Jahmeer Carter says. “Having enough guys to play regardless. First and foremost it starts with me showing the culture. I’ve been here for a while, so I know Elliott’s culture and vision.”
Many of those 19 transfers are grad students and they came to UVA to win starting jobs.
“Everybody wants to compete, everyone was competing out there giving it their all,” says UVA grad student receiver Jayden Thomas, who transferred from Notre Dame. “That’s what I love about this University that’s why I cam here. We’re just trying to get to coach Elliott’s goal of winning a championship here.”
A lot of eyes on transfer quarterback Chandler Morris who will likely be Virginia’s starter.
“Great arm out there, He’s doing everything he can out there to get his timing right with us,” says Thomas.
“Chandler’s good, loving having him around,” says UVA senior tight end Dakota Twitty. Him and Danny, hey bring a total different energy, bring their energy from where they’ve been and the experiences they’ve had with the guys we have here, it’s just been great to see and great to watch.”
This was the first of 15 spring practices for Virginia. It will culminate with the annual spring game on Sunday, April 12th.
