Massey tabbed as new G.W. Long head football coach, athletic director

SKIPPERVILLE, Ala. (WTVY) – The search for a new head football coach at G.W. Long High School did not take long, as the school announced Tuesday that Clay Massey would be the next man to assume the headset in Skipperville.

Massey, a native of Selma and a graduate of the University of Alabama, becomes the 14th head coach for the Rebels football program, taking over for David Watts who stepped down in January after four seasons leading the program to join the staff at Dothan High School.

“Coach Massey’s proven track record as a coach, his genuine energy and passion for student-athletes, and his desire to be a part of our school and community were highly evident in all of our conversations,” said G.W. Long Principal Daniel Barrentine about what made Massey stand out compared to other possible candidates. “He is a dedicated leader who knows the game of football, cares deeply for his players, and understands how to build a strong, cohesive team.”

In addition to being named head football coach, Massey will also serve as the school’s new Athletic Director.

Massey comes to the Dale County school after serving last season as Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach at Decatur High School. The Red Raiders under head coach John Ritter went 2-8 in 2024, finishing sixth in 6A-Region 7.

Prior to his short stop in Morgan County, Massey spent seven seasons at Bibb County High School in Centreville, serving as Defensive Coordinator during most of his time and as Athletic Director for the latter half of his time there.

Massey’s Choctaw defenses regularly ranked among the best in the state during his time there, especially in being able to keep the opponents out of the endzone. Bibb County went 67-19 during that period with three region championships.

Massey also has coaching experience both on offense and defense during stints at Pelham, Demopolis, Citronelle, and Stanhope Elmore.

Joining Clay is his family, including his wife Julie and their two children Sydney Kate (11) and Andrew (8).
