Former Penn State football safety Jaylen Reed proved to be a reliable college playmaker when needed most.
What did he show NFL personnel at the scouting combine this week?
Reed certainly stepped up last year for the College Football Playoff Nittany Lions, anchoring the secondary after All-America teammate and fellow safety KJ Winston was lost early to injury.
Reed delivered career-best numbers as a senior − a team-leading 98 tackles (including 6.5 for loss, 2.5 sacks) and three clutch interceptions. One of his INTs sent the USC game to overtime, another he returned for a touchdown to break open the Wisconsin game.
While Reed does not own the high-level size or speed to be a top draft pick, he’s an instinctive, savvy defender who could earn a lengthy NFL career, starting on special teams. He figures to be a mid- to late-round draft selection in Green Bay in late April.
He’s one of five Penn State players at the NFL combine in Indianapolis, joining Winston, defensive end Abdul Carter, tight end Tyler Warren and linebacker Kobe King.
Here’s how Reed fared in Friday’s workouts and testing:
Jaylen Reed NFL combine results
Reed went through requisite medical exams and team interviews Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday, he was measured at a shade over 5-foot-11 and 211 pounds with 30 3/8-inch arms and 9-inch hands.
Reed ripped off two impressive 40-yard dash times at 4.50 seconds and a 4.49, the latter which ranked tied for eighth among all safeties on Friday.
His 33.5-inch vertical jump was middle of the pack, but his 1.51-second, 10-yard split tied for third among safeties.. He’s scheduled to bench press on Saturday.
Jaylen Reed 40 time
Reed helped himself leading up to Penn State’s Pro Day on March 28 and the NFL Draft in late April. His 40-yard dash best of 4.49 seconds could help solidify him as a mid-round draft pick, at the least. He could even now bump up into the third round on Day Two of the draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
Previously, Reed had most recently been timed at 4.50 seconds in the 40-yard dash, according to NFL Draft Buzz.
