EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The National Football League caught eyeballs when it aired a campaign for girls flag football to be sanctioned in all 50 states during the Super Bowl.
Illinois is one of the few that has done it, but most states haven’t sanctioned it at the high school level yet.
That includes Indiana and Kentucky. Indiana is progressing quickly towards that goal.
The IHSAA has a proposal to put it into the emerging sport process this spring. If approved, that would put it on the fast track to be potentially be fully sanctioned in just a couple of years.
The Colts are heavily involved, donating $3 million towards growing the sports in Indiana over the next three years.
In most of the state, IHSAA Commissioner Paul Neidig says that having girls flag football sanctioned would be a good thing.
“80% of the girls that play aren’t involved in any other high school sports. So it’s not taking away from anything,” said Neidig.
Evansville may be a different story. The EVSC’s athletic director, Andy Owen, tells Eyewitness News that EVSC schools being smaller than others could cause an issue. He said that there might not be enough athletes to support another fall sport right now.
Growth would have to start from the youth level. The Evansville Junior Football League recently sent out a survey to see how much interest there would be in starting a girls flag football program. EJFL’s President, Brian Wassmer, said that so far the responses have been encouraging.
The NFL’s push comes ahead of flag football being in the 2028 Olympics.
