AUSTIN, Texas — Former Oklahoma State assistant coach Jason McEndoo has joined Texas football’s coaching staff.
The 49-year-old McEndoo spent a decade on Mike Gundy’s staff with the Cowboys, primarily coaching tight ends and fullbacks.
McEndoo was college teammates with Texas tight ends coach/special teams coordinator Jeff Banks and linebackers coach/co-defensive coordinator Johnny Nansen, playing collegiately at Washington State as an offensive lineman from 1995-1998.
Following his time with the Cougars, McEndoo spent three seasons in the NFL, with Seattle from 1998-1999 followed by a one-season stint with the New Orleans Saints in 2000.
McEndoo’s first collegiate coaching job came at Montana State in 2003, where he spent three seasons on the Bobcats’ staff with current Texas defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.
Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns’ staff has remained mostly intact over the team’s last two seasons, where Texas has amassed 25 wins and back-to-back College Football Playoff semifinal appearances.
However, veteran safeties coach and former Texas standout Blake Gideon recently left the program to take the defensive coordinator role at Georgia Tech.
Last season saw defensive line coach Bo Davis depart for LSU and was replaced by current position coach Kenny Baker.
From Sarkisian’s original staff when he took over in 2021, quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee, Banks, offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Kyle Flood, Kwiatkowski and cornerbacks coach Terry Joseph remain.
During McEndoo’s tenure with Oklahoma State, the tight end position wasn’t a focal point of Gundy’s offense, but did produce several players who earned postseason Big 12 honors.
In his first season with the Cowboys, McEndoo coached Blake Jarwin, who earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2015 and then was a second-team All-Big 12 honoree in 2016. Jarwin hauled in 36 receptions for 509 yards and four touchdowns during his two seasons under McEndoo’s tutelage, before playing five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
Over the last four seasons, McEndoo has coached five players in tight ends Logan Carter, Jelani Woods, Jake Schultz, Josiah Johnson and fullback Braden Cassity to All-Big 12 honorable mention honors. Woods would go on to be a third-round selection of the Indianapolis Colts in 2022.
Banks is highly regarded as one of the top special teams coaches in the nation, but also has done excellent work with the tight end room with the Longhorns. Former Texas tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders established a new single season program-record for receptions by a tight end (54) and receiving yards (682) – en route to leaving as Texas’ all-time leader in receptions at the position.
Sanders’ single-season marks were broken last season by Gunnar Helm, who recorded 60 receptions for 786 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024.
Entering the 2025 season, Texas has several players in the tight end room who are high on talent but short on experience.
With the transfer of Amari Niblack to Texas A&M and graduations of Helm and senior Juan Davis, Texas doesn’t return a player with a reception at the position. Freshman Jordan Washington and sophomore Spencer Shannon are the lone players with collegiate experience, as both players appeared in mop-up duty in 2024.
