Beloved Lake City football coach returns to school after life-threatening crash

LAKE CITY, S.C. (WMBF) – The Lake City High School community got a big surprise Thursday night between boys and girls basketball games.

LCHS football coach Ronnie Baker came onto the hardwood following on Thursday – which also marked senior night for both teams.

It marked Baker’s first public appearance since he was seriously injured in a July 2023 bus crash involving a mini-bus carrying him and four students. All four of the students also recovered.

Baker said coming back was all about the kids on the court, but said he was appreciative of the community’s love and support.

“It means a lot,” he said. “We put in a lot of time during our time here working, and just for them to reciprocate that back to me felt great tonight. It felt wonderful.”

It was recently announced Baker will receive the Braveheart Award from the South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association in March, which officials say is “given in recognition of an individual who has exhibited a ‘spirit of bravery’ and ‘courage’ while enduring a ‘trying personal experience and continuing to perform their daily duties.”

Jamison Estep took over as the team’s head coach in Baker’s absence.
