Archbishop Stepinac High School announceed Alfred (AJ) Magee as the new Head of the Football Program and Varsity Head Coach. Coach Magee’s appointment marks a return to his roots at Stepinac, where his coaching career began in 2016. Magee takes over for Michael O’Donnell, who led the varsity team for an impressive 38 years. He is the seventh varsity football coach in school history.
Magee comes back to Stepinac from Wagner College, where he served as a graduate assistant on the Seahawks coaching staff on both sides of the ball. At Wagner, Magee was the Assistant Coach / Tight Ends / Offensive Quality Control and Recruiting Coordinator for NY. Magee first joined Stepinac as an assistant junior varsity coach, quickly demonstrating his dedication and versatility by coaching wide receivers, quarterbacks, and defensive backs. In addition, he served as the special teams coordinator, a role in which his strategic insights proved invaluable.
In 2018, Magee was promoted to head junior varsity coach while continuing as an assistant quarterbacks coach for the varsity team. That year, he played a pivotal role in helping Archbishop Stepinac capture the New York State Catholic League Championship, further solidifying his reputation as a talented and driven coach.
Magee, a 2021 graduate of Manhattanville College, has continued to build an impressive resume. Following his time at Stepinac, he joined Massachusetts Maritime Academy for the 2022 season, where he held multiple roles, including coaching linebackers and tight ends and serving as the Buccaneers’ Recruiting Coordinator. These experiences have provided Magee with a diverse skill set and a strong understanding of player development, team strategy, and talent identification.
“We are thrilled to welcome AJ Magee back to the Stepinac family,” said Paul Carty, Principal of Archbishop Stepinac High School. “His passion for the game, dedication to his players, and commitment to our school’s mission make him the ideal leader for our varsity football team.”
Magee’s return to Stepinac comes with a vision of excellence both on and off the field. Known for his dynamic coaching style and ability to connect with players, Magee is dedicated to fostering a program that builds character, leadership, and teamwork.
“Returning to Stepinac feels like coming home,” said Magee. “This is where my coaching journey began, and I’m honored to lead a program with such a rich tradition of excellence. I look forward to working with our talented student-athletes and continuing to build on the strong foundation that has been established here.”
Stepinac High School is excited to embark on this new chapter under Coach Magee’s leadership and invites the community to support the Crusaders in the upcoming season. Please join us in welcoming Coach Magee back to Stepinac and wishing him success as he leads the football program to new heights.
