Police arrested a University of Texas Rio Grande Valley football recruit last year after he allegedly filmed himself having consensual sex with a woman who didn’t know he was recording her.
University police arrested Tristan Compton, a 19-year-old long snapper from Buda, on Oct. 10 and charged him with invasive visual recording, a state jail felony.
According to UTRGV, Compton was no longer part of its program the day after his arrest, though it’s not clear when or in what manner he left the program.
Compton has since announced his commitment to play at Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas.
The university and Hidalgo County resisted releasing documents about that arrest until an attorney general’s opinion obliged the county to in January.
The county released a single-page probable cause statement last week.
According to that statement, a woman told UTRGV police she was having consensual sex with Compton at her apartment on Sept. 12 of last year when she noticed a flash of light.
The woman confronted Compton, the statement says, and realized he was recording a video of her with his cell phone.
The woman saw the video of herself and “tried deleting the recording from Compton’s phone.”
Compton, the statement says, assured her that the video had been deleted.
Four days later, however, the victim reported her allegations to police.
The probable cause statement says Compton contacted his assistant football coaches and admitted that he had recorded the woman without her consent.
Police arrested Compton a little more than a month after she reported the allegations.
A request for documents or communication filed with UTRGV related to Compton’s exit from the team failed to turn up responsive records.
The university said in a statement issued the day after the arrest that Compton was no longer involved with its football team.
“UTRGV Athletics is aware of the situation and this individual is no longer part of the football program,” the university said in a statement. “We take these matters very seriously and do not tolerate this type of behavior. We will have no further comment.”
The arrest did not, however, appear to have derailed Compton’s collegiate football career for long.
In January he wrote on social media that he was “excited to announce” that he had committed to play football at Navarro College this spring.
In a statement issued earlier this month, Navarro College declined to comment on Compton’s status with its football program or his arrest.
“Due to federal student privacy laws, including FERPA, Navarro College is unable to confirm or disclose information regarding individual students’ enrollment or disciplinary records,” the statement said. “We encourage you to reach out to the appropriate law enforcement authorities regarding any criminal matters.”
The Progress Times filed an open records request with Navarro College seeking records related to Compton’s commitment with its football program but had not received a response as of press time.
Compton did not return requests for comment.
