HOULTON, Maine (WAGM) – National Signing day is the first day a High School senior can sign a letter of intent with a Division 1 or 2 college. On this signing day, Isaiah Ervin became the first County athlete to commit to a D1 college for football. I caught up with him to discuss his decision on attending the University of Maine Orono on a football scholarship.
“We took a visit, me and my dad, on Saturday, it was actually kind of a late thing. Coach Stevens was actually the one who reached out to me, he’s the head coach and we took a visit down Saturday. It was a great visit and me and dad needed some time to talk it out. About last night is when me and him decided I would be taking my talents to the University of Maine,” said Isaiah Ervin, Houlton High School senior.
Ervin is excited to branch out to a different part of the state.
“I kinda knew I would be moving out of the County no matter what. Because I was either going to play lacrosse or football at the next level, therefore there are no County schools that have lacrosse or football. I’m feeling good, it’s a new opportunity to explore so I’m excited,” said Ervin.
He didn’t have a preference on which sport he would rather play in college.
“Either one, just to continue to play sports in college, I didn’t really want to play basketball. But either lacrosse or football I would have been fine playing and I got the opportunity to play either one which is better,” said Ervin.
Many different factors went into the decision.
“I mean they’ve got all the resources down there that can mold me into the player I want to become and the player I can become. So I’m wicked excited to be able to be given the opportunity to be able to play at the next level and even more to be able to play at the division 1 level,” said Ervin.
Positionally, Ervin is keeping his options open.
“I’m going more in as a safety, so played some defensive back during my high school career. But they’re also going to be trying me our at receiver as well, just whatever fits better at the end of the day,” said Ervin.
Just because he has committed to a D1 program, doesn’t mean he’ll need to change his regimen.
“I’ve been training since freshman year so it’s kind of stay on the same thing, eat the same thing, keep going. So not really. Gonna have to up the intensity a little bit but that’s to come,” said Ervin
He wasn’t just thinking about his own commitment, Ervin also noted the success of his classmate Teanne Ewings, who announced the next day that she would be committing to UConn Track and Field.
“We’ve got even a couple from our cross country team that are going to go run for some division 1 programs as well so that’s good, and I hope it just keeps going up and up,” said Ervin.
While Ervin made history when he announced his commitment, the three-sport athlete isn’t slowing down from high school sports just yet. The Shires varsity boys basketball team will face Belfast at home tomorrow evening at six.
